I've been anticipating this mouth watering CGI 3D movie for a while now, ever since I saw the previews over the Summer, and I can say unequivocally it has lived up to my expectations and then some. It also sends a message, that only James Cameron could render so vividly, that we are like babies. No, no, not like infants crying in a crib, but naive, innocent, foolhardy, and wreckless in our ways, the ways of modern civilization, a techno 5 year old who believes the world revolves him. We, the humans, seem to lack the wisdom that lies in the message of Avatar. I particularly like the part in the movie where the alien native explains that we borrow energy from the Earth, life spring, God, whatever you want to call it, during our lives, and all living things must eventually give it back. The energy is never created and never destroyed, it's shared, and because of that all life is to be respected and appreciated - not raped, mined, and pushed aside as we like. Humanity has done a great deal of that for a long time now, because it seems we have forgotten an ancient wisdom, a wisdom that we are not the only living things in the world that deserve to be here. The wisdom that life energy is shared, transferred, and should be revered and gratitude given. Also, that money doesn't have to be a part of it. A different kind of civilization that can prosper and mature without all the techno gadgets that seem to make our lives that much better, when in essence they only destroy our freedom and rot our soul.

Also, I found this blog entry from the "Doomstead Diary" particularly good concerning the movie. http://doomsteaddiary.blogspot.com/2009/12/avatar.html
I can think of another movie, about American Indians - whose culture I have great affection for, called The Last of The Mohicans in which there is a great scene (near the beginning of the movie) where they give thanks to a deer they have hunted and killed. You won't see the rednecks around here who go stomping through the woods drinking beer, driving their 4x4's and ATV's, or sitting in a tree stand after scattering corn bait, giving any thanks. No what you typically see is abunch of testosterone driven retards standing over their kill whooping and carrying on as they spit chew over the carcase and take pictures holding up some horns. There is no respect given, but rather egregious disdain for their "brother" - the deer who has given up its life for their sustenance. Think about that next time you wolf down your next meaty meal, that that animal has given up its life so you can live, it has given some of its energy to you, but just keep in mind one thing - in the end YOU WILL GIVE BACK ALL OF YOUR ENERGY. That nugget of wisdom that modern culture seems to lack, thanks to Mansanto, modern farms, and chemical agriculture, that we are all connected, dependent, and supported by the living Earth. It is not a thing that is separate from us in any way shape or form.

Listen here to this scene where the main character clearly describes the differences between our current culture and the wisdom of ages past. "Greed for more than we can use." That is the way of the Europeans - Western civilization (Ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt). We are like babies.
